Remote Approach Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why would I want to track a PDF documents?
While tracking the number of downloads can be adequate for some needs, it misses the bigger picture of overall readership and reach. Someone might download your PDF and then never read it. Alternatively, they might read it a half dozen times and send it to twice as many friends. Using Remote Approach's MAP-TAG technology, you will be able to access and analyze the information you are currently lacking.
If you are a publisher who needs to know your total readership this information is crucial. If you are a service agency using your PDF files to augment your branding, this information can be used to analyze the Return on Investment of PDF development - allowing you to justify and measure your budget and identifying areas where you are wasting money.

Tracking is fine, but if someone has illegally distributed my document - or if the document is out of date - what good is that?

Using our MAP-TAG technology, you can not only track the document but you can shut them down. You can deactivate your PDF files - in general or for specific people to help prevent unauthorized readers.

How can I track them if they're not on the Internet?

We are currently beta testing a version of Remote Approach that allows you to specify that if your reader is not connected to the Internet, then they cannot read the document.

Does Remote Approach pose any privacy risks?

No. By default, Remote Approach only passes back non-personal information (for example IP address) for tracking and reporting purposes. If your privacy policy allowed, a customized installation could track more but we would only pass information within the confines of your agreement with them. For example, if they purchased a PDF with MAP-TAG technology embedded, the system could pass back a Personal ID code that - beyond the scope of your tracking - has no meaning for the user but can be cross referenced with the data you collected on the user at time of purchase or registration.

Is Remote Approach spyware?

Absolutely not. The software retrieves no information from the user's computer and leaves no software behind.

How does this differ from a Watermark?

A watermark is used to identify PDF documents. There are some companies who use this technology in a similar fashion to protecting digital images. The watermark is inserted into the document (or image) and spiders search the Web looking for people who have illegally posted it. Our technology is pro active - not reactive. When it opens, it contacts the reporting engine for a broader and more realistic picture.

How does this differ from Digital Rights management?

Briefly, Digital Rights Management or Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) is an umbrella term for any of several arrangements by which the usage of (primarily) copyrighted digital work can be restricted by the owner of the rights to the work. The actual arrangements are called technical protection measures (although the distinction between the two terms is not particularly clear). In a sense, this is a form of Digital Rights Management. Its primary purpose though is Document Distribution Measurement and tracking. It is not meant to replace your current e-commerce systems.

Do I need to redesign my PDF to accommodate the MAP-TAG?
No. Both our automated on-line system and our custom services allow MAP-TAGs to be installed within your existing PDF files.

Not based on downloads but on real document and page interaction.
